There are several significant steps in water treatment, including:

  • Filtration – e.g. Biosand
  • Coagulation & Flocculation
  • Biological degradation – aeration, microbial digestion, etc. (if wastewater)
  • Settling / Sedimentation
  • Removal of excess nitrogen and phosphorous
  • Discharge (if wastewater)
  • Disinfection (if for drinking) – UV, chlorination, etc.
